When first handed this CD I was unsure what to expect. Some of my all-time
favourite players playing quartets - great! However, what has time and age
done to them? I had a certain level of trepidation just before I hit the play button, fearing the worst.
The first entry in Spurgin's Foursome for Brass not only put my mind at ease,
but set such a high standard that I listened for the next 63 minutes in absolute awe. The sheer artistry, technical prowess and stunning ensemble skills had me spellbound. Jim Shepherd's playing reminded me why I started on cornet all those years ago...he really is a legend! He still has a brilliant sound, possesses flawless technique and displays consummate artistry. The same goes for the great Lyndon Baglin on euphonium. - just phenomenal. William (Billy) Rushworth, Brighouse and Rastrick's current solo horn, does what few horn players can - makes music.
Huug Steketee slips into this stellar line-up with such ease. It must have been daunting playing in such a group, but 'our man in Holland' holds his own with style.
This is the best CD I have listened to in quite some time; with some of the finest playing I have ever heard. 'Must have item' is an overused term, but on on this occasion it really does apply.
If you love music, brass playing or just things of quality, then this CD is for you.
Directed by James Scott, it is a model from which all brass players should listen and learn.
