William Rushworth - was born in Dewsbury and can justifiably claim to come from a legendary brass band family. His early childhood was spent in Australia, where he began playing the guitar at nine years of age, switching to cornet three years later. The next few years saw him playing with City of Enfield, Kensington, and Norwood bands.
When the James Shepherd Versatile Brass toured Australia in 1978, William was an enthusiastic fan and later, on his return to England, he became principal cornet of Queensbury Music Centre Band (founded by James Shepherd). His next move saw him appointed principal cornet with the Markham Main Colliery Band. The move from cornet to horn came a few years later at Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band, where he first the repiano cornet.
He can boast involvement with a host of top level bands including Hammond’s Sauce Works, YBS, Stocksbridge and Black Dyke bands. It was at Hammond’s that William's solo career blossomed under the influential Geoffrey Whitham.
As a soloist he was the Tenor Horn Champion of Great Britain for three consecutive years, and also crowned Champion Soloist at the Brass in Concert Championships on the two occasions he was featured.
After major contest successes YBS and Black Dyke he moved to JJB Sports Leyland Band under Richard Evans, where he enjoyed many memorable performances. He has also appeared as the regular principal horn with the Brass Band of Battle Creek.
Quartet playing is nothing new to William, having been the horn player in the Champion Quartet of Great Britain on no less than four consecutive occasions.
William has also made an impression as a conductor with considerable success with several bands, most notably winning the Grand Shield with Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band at his first attempt.
Currently, William proudly occupies the position of Solo Horn of Brighouse and Rastrick Band, a position held 80 years ago by his grandfather, Sam Rushworth.
William feels so privileged to appear on this CD with his childhood heroes James Shepherd and Lyndon Baglin, not to mention Huug!
